For this piece I wanted to create an abstract continuous memory space, where the figures will float through time assisted by the winding ceiling of the Knole house and mirror floor.
The set pieces of the play will serve as further abstractions, slightly disrupting the reflection with their black geometric forms, like a chunk cut out of the ceiling. I want the set to act as a backdrop for the drama and fun of the piece, underlying the magical realism, as if Orlando is travelling through a memory, with only himself and the wood panelling to connect him to reality.
The costumes will anchor the performance to each time-period, with an exaggerated historical silhouette and modern colours and materials. Over the course of the play the chorus and characters costumes will converge into Orlando's contrasting silhouette, a modern suit with a tight waist. The colours of the piece are intended to be bright and playful, demonstrating how alienating this new world is to Orlando, except for the Queen and Sasha. They are dressed respectively in cream and blue, brown, and white, indicating their close personal connection to Orlando, with colour palettes that are a step towards realistic.

Performance Design / Civil Systems
Madeleine is a recent graduate from the Bachelor of Design, studying civil engineering and performance design. Her interest lies in the problem-solving aspects of the two disparate fields as she brings creativity and practicality to her work, focusing on exaggerating shape and form through the exploration of space and the figure.
Her introduction to the theatre started with many years of dance, both competitive and casual, leading to a strong interest in sewing and costumes. Madeleine then became involved in high school and local theatre, both as an actor/dancer and costumier, assisting in the foundation of her school's musical theatre club.
She has worked on costumes for Legally Blonde (2018) at school, and Aladdin Jr and A Chorus Line (2019) for a community musical theatre company. Madeleine is excited to maintain her passion for costumes, hoping to bring many characters to life onstage in the future.
