Orlando

Sarah Ruhl's adaptation of Virginia Woolf's Orlando is sharp, poignant and contemplative, telling the story of a soul that transcends time, place and gender on a journey to find identity. In my design I aimed to capture the experience I had reading the play for the first time in a minimalist set, giving both the audience and performance room to breathe and reflect. Allowing the audience to garner their own interpretation of the space, based on personal knowledge and experience, perfectly encapsulates the essence of Orlando's individuality and the notion of perceiving and experiencing the world through your own lens. The heart of the piece is an abstracted oak tree, the catalyst for Orlando and their heart. This heart is able to be pulled, manipulated and warped, reflecting the malleability of a person in relation to their surroundings; the state of the tree giving us an indiction into Orlando's interior psyche. Contrasting sharp edges of the grounding structures and a dynamic flow of the ropes above visualise the harsh juxtaposition of Orlando's self and their reality. In its entirety the space intends to incite thought as well as beauty, motivating audiences to reflect on how they themselves can be moulded.
